The massive limestone-faced ramparts of the Royal Citadel were built in the 17th Century on the eastern promontory of Plymouth Hoe to defend the approach to Plymouths historic harbour and safe anchorage from possible attack. The ornate baroque main gate (above), leads into the largest fortress built in England as a Citadel. It has been occupied by the military from 1671 to the present day. Public tours are available Tuesdays and Thursdays May to September.
The Royal Citadel is the HQ and home of 29 commandos R.A. and as a working military base; tours are subject to MOD regulations.
